Smit-Fal’kner, Mariia Natanovna 

Born Feb. 4 (16), 1878, in Taganrog; died Mar. 7, 1968, in Moscow. Soviet economist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). Member of the CPSU from 1918.

Smit-Fal’kner studied at the faculty of economics of the University of London. From 1918 to 1919 she headed the Economic Research Department of the Supreme Council on the National Economy. In 1919 she was in the Red Army on the Southern Front. Beginning in 1921, Smit-Fal’kner taught at various higher educational institutions, including Moscow State University, the G. V. Plekhanov Moscow Institute of the National Economy, and the Institute of Petroleum. She carried out research at the Economics Research Institute of Gosplan (State Planning Commission) of the USSR and at the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Smit-Fal’kner’s studies deal mainly with problems in statistics and the political economy of capitalism and socialism. She edited the Soviet editions of the works of D. Ricardo and W. Petty. Smit-Fal’kner was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals.
