Smith, Emmitt (Emmitt James Smith 3d), 1969–, U.S. football player, b. Pensacola, Fla. An All-America running back at the Univ. of Florida, Smith spent nearly his entire National Football League career with the Dallas Cowboys (1990–2003); he also played for the Arizona Cardinals (2003–5). He is the league's all-time leading rusher (18,355 yards) and also holds the records for most seasons (11) with 1,000 yards rushing and most career and postseason rushing touchdowns. He is a four-time NFL rushing champion (1991–93, 1995) and and was the 1990 Rookie of the Year and the 1993 Most Valuable Player. Smith, Emmitt(born May 15, 1969, Pensacola, Fla., U.S.) U.S. football player. He set 58 school football records at the University of Florida, and as a running back for the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL (1990–2002), he helped his team win three Super Bowl games. In 1995 he set the all-time NFL record for touchdowns in a single season (25), and he holds the record for most career rushing touchdowns (164). In 2002 he surpassed Walter Payton to become the NFL's all-time leading rusher. He played two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and retired in 2004 with 18,355 career rushing yards.
