Smith, Holland M. (McTyeire) (1882–1967) marine officer; born in Seale, Ala. He gave up a law career for a marine commission in 1905, and after serving in the Philippines, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, he saw action in France from 1917 to 1918. During World War II, "Howlin' Mad" Smith led the Fifth Amphibious Corps in the bloody Pacific campaigns of the Gilbert, Marshall, and Mariana Islands, and commanded at Iwo Jima in 1945, scene of the most vicious fighting in Marine Corps history.
