Smith, Oliver (Lemuel) (1918–94) set designer; born in Waupun, Wis. Winner of many awards including seven Tonys and the Sam S. Shubert Award for Achievement in the Theatre, his designs span all aspects of performance—drama, opera, ballet and film. He began his Broadway career in 1942 with Rosalinda. Thereafter he designed for Brigadoon (1947), My Fair Lady (1956), West Side Story (1957), and The Odd Couple (1965).

But the victory at Aigburth - Lancashire's first four-day success for over two months - was a huge boost to a team which included home-grown youngsters like Tom Smith, Oliver Newby and Karl Brown in preference to the experience of Dominic Cork and Lou Vincent.
That's got to make sense in terms of team spirit and long-term planning, although it leaves Glen Chapple leading an otherwise callow seam attack comprising Tom Smith, Oliver Newby and Steven Croft.
