Smith, Vincent Arthur

    0.01 sec.
Smith, Vincent Arthur

Born June 3, 1848, in Dublin, Ireland; died Feb. 6, 1920, in Oxford. British indologist. Author of studies on the history, numismatics, epigraphy, art, and culture of ancient and medieval India.

Of particular interest are Smith’s works on the Sakas, Kush-ans, and Vakatakas, which have contributed much to knowledge of the history of India during the first millennium A.D. In The Early History of India, Smith systematized and summarized the material on the ancient and early medieval periods that had accumulated by the early 20th century. His short Oxford History of India is also well known.
