In north-central TN, northeast of Nashville; organized Oct 26, 1799 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Col. Daniel Smith (1748-1818), officer in the Revolutionary War, member of the first TN Constitutional Convention (1796), and U.S. senator from TN (1798-99; 1805-09).
