Smith Mountain Lake State Park Location: 40 miles from Lynchburg on the north shore of Smith Mountain Lake. Facilities: 50 campsites (24 with water and electric hookups), 20 cabins (é), restrooms, picnic area, picnic shelter, hiking trails, boat launch, dock, boat rentals, fishing pier (é), swimming beach, bathhouse (é), snack bar, visitor center, amphitheater, playground (é), gift shop. Activities: Camping, boating, hiking, fishing, swimming, hunting (by reservation), interpretive programs. Special Features: Located on the second largest freshwater lake in the state, the park is a favorite destination for water enthusiasts. Smith Mountain Lake was created in 1960 when Appalachian Power built a dam on the Roanoke River in Smith Mountain Gap.
