Smooth Snake

(Coronella austriaca), a snake of the family Colubridae.

The body of the smooth snake reaches 80 cm in length. It is brown or grayish brown on top; the males usually have a reddish tint; on the back there are two to four longitudinal rows of blackish specks. It is common over almost all Europe and western Asia; it is found in the European USSR and western Kazakh-stan, usually in open areas, and in the Caucasus up to an elevation of 2,500 m. It feeds primarily on lizards, small rodents, and insects. It is ovoviparous. In some regions the common adder, a poisonous snake, is sometimes erroneously identified as the nonpoisonous smooth snake, because the coloration is similar.
