Smugglers Notch State Park Location: 10 miles northwest of Stowe, Highway 108. Facilities: 34 campsites (14 with lean-tos), 15 walk-in campsites (3 lean-tos), hot showers, picnic areas, hiking trails. Activities: Camping, hiking. Special Features: Smugglers Notch is a narrow pass through the mountain with 1,000-foot cliffs on both sides. In 1807, when an embargo forbade trade with Great Britain and Canada, Vermonters continued to trade illegally with Canada, herding cattle and carrying other goods through the Notch. Later, fugitive slaves used the Notch as an escape route. During Prohibition in the 1920s, liquor was smuggled in from Canada.
