Smyth, Herbert Weir (1857–1938) classicist; born in Wilmington, Del. He spent most of his teaching career (1901–25) at Harvard, where he had earned his B.A. in 1876. His many publications include The Ionic Dialect (1894); Greek Grammar (1920); his University of California Sather lectures, Aeschylean Tragedy (1924); and the Loeb edition of the plays of Aeschylus (1922). After his death, his personal library became the basis of Harvard's classics collection, the Smyth, housed in the Widener Library. |
