In northwestern WA, bordered on west by Puget Sound, northeast of Seattle. Organized Jan 14, 1861 (prior to statehood) from Island County. Name Origin: For the Snohomish Indians; name is believed to mean 'tidewater people' or 'union.'

Area (sq mi): 2196.41 (land 2089.06; water 107.35). Pop per sq mi: 314.00.
Pop 2005: 655,944. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.20%; 1990-2000 30.10%. Pop 2000: 606,024 (White 83.40%; Black or African American 1.70%; Hispanic or Latino 4.70%; Asian 5.80%; Other 7.00%). Foreign born: 9.70%. Median age: 34.70.
Income 2000: per capita $23,417; median household $53,060; Pop below poverty level: 6.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $30,393-$31,964.
Unemployment 2004: 5.60%. Change from 2000: 0.20%. Median travel time to work: 29.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 37.20%.
