Snouck Hurgronje, Christiaan
Born Feb. 8. 1857, in Oosterhout, North Brabant; died June 26, 1936, in Oegst-geest, near Leiden. Dutch Islamist. Snouk Hurgronje was a student of M. J. de Goeje and T. Nöldeke. From 1891 to 1906 he was a government adviser in the Dutch East India Company. From 1906 to 1927 he was a professor at the University of Leiden and president of the Amsterdam Academy of Sciences. He was made an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1927. Snouck Hurgronje and the Hungarian Islamist I. Goldziher proved that the greater part of the hadith, the body of deeds and sayings attributed to Muhammad, was composed not in the earliest period of Islam but in the late seventh or eighth century.
