Snow Finch
(Montifringilla nivalis), a bird of the family Plo-ceidae of the order Passeriformes. The snow finch is 18 cm long and weighs about 35 g. The head is gray, the back dull brown, and the throat black; the wings have white patches. The snow finch is found in the mountains of central and southern Europe and Asia. In the USSR it occurs in the Caucasus, in the mountains of Middle Asia, and in the Altai. It inhabits high mountains, descending to lower elevations only after heavy snowfalls. It nests in rock crevices and on buildings. A clutch contains four to six white eggs. The snow finch feeds on seeds and insects in mountain meadows near snowfields.
