Snyder, Hartland S. (Sweet) (1913–62) physicist; born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was at Northwestern (1940–47) before joining the Brookhaven National Laboratories (1947–62). With E. Courant and M. S. Livingston, he discovered the alternating gradient focusing principle, which enabled construction of powerful nuclear reactors.
