Sohag (sō`hăg) or Sawhaj (sô`häj), town (1986 pop. 132,649), capital of Sohag governorate, central Egypt, on the Nile River. It is located in a densely populated agricultural region. Local industries include ginned cotton and silk weaving. Two Coptic monasteries are there. Nearby is Bayt Khallaf, the site of a mastaba built under King Zoser (III dynasty). In both periods, the two best represented governorates for Port Said were adjacent Damietta and Daqahliya, for Suez they were the two upper Egyptian governorates of Sohag and Qena, and for Ismailiya they were the neighboring governorate of Sharqiya and the Upper Egyptian governorate of Qena. A court in the Sohag governorate acquitted most of the defendants and issued light sentences on the rest, triggering Coptic anger. An earlier similar call was made by local Gama 'a leaders in Minya and Sohag in 1994. |
