Soke
a privilege of immunity enjoyed by landlords in medieval England. In the Anglo-Saxon period a soke granted either the right of jurisdiction over a given district (also called a soke) or the right to receive fines and confiscate property from residents of this district. From the second half of the 11th century to the end of the 13th, the soke was identified as the right to hold a court of justice to hear not only cases of serf tenants but also those of free tenants; it served as an instrument in the enserfment of free tenants.
