Sokiriany

 

a city (since 1966) and administrative center of Sokiriany Raion, Chernovtsy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Located 3 km from Sokiriany railroad station on the Oknitsa-Larga line. Population, 11,300 (1975). Sokiriany has a timber combine, a food-processing combine, a cheese plant, a building-materials plant, and other enterprises.

After the Soviet takeover in 1940, Sokiriany, together with the whole county of Hotin (Khotin in Russian and Ukrainian) to which it belonged, were chopped off from Bessarabia and included in the Chernivtsy region of Ukraine together with northern Bukovina (the criterion was that Ukrainians predominated in Hotin and surrounding villages) and the Herta district.
