In N central CA, NE of San Francisco; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Saint Francis Solano and for Sem-yeto, a chief of the Soscol and Suisun Indians, who had accepted the Christian name of the saint at his baptism.

Area (sq mi): 906.67 (land 829.19; water 77.48). Pop per sq mi: 496.40.
Pop 2005: 411,593. State rank: 19. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.30%; 1990-2000 15.90%. Pop 2000: 394,542 (White 49.20%; Black or African American 14.90%; Hispanic or Latino 17.60%; Asian 12.70%; Other 16.00%). Foreign born: 16.90%. Median age: 33.90.
Income 2000: per capita $21,731; median household $54,099; Pop below poverty level: 8.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,576-$30,259.
