SNO+ would piggyback on and use the same detector as a highly successful solar neutrino project called the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, which played an important role in solving a long-standing conundrum.
His sideline as a journalist continued to broaden his knowledge of physics beyond his own field, while a technical paper he wrote on the solar neutrino problem - the mismatch between the flows of photons and neutrinos from the sun - taught him the value of a snappy headline.
The next year or two will involve observations to "pin down the numbers" on the solar neutrino experiment.
