Soldatov, Vladimir Konstantinovich 

Born July 3 (15), 1875, in the city of Verkholensk, now in Irkutsk Oblast; died Jan. 31,1941, in Moscow. Soviet ichthyologist.

From 1919 to 1941, Soldatov was a professor at the Moscow Technical Institute of Fishing Industry and Fish Farming (from 1919 to 1930, the fish-farming department of the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy). His principal works dealt with the biology and the commercial fishing of Salmonidae (1912) and Acipenseridae (1915) in the Amur River basin. He described many new fish species and genera. Soldatov was the author of the textbooks Fishes and Commercial Fishing (1928) and CommercialIchthyology (vols. 1–2, 1934–38), as well as of the first Soviet guide to the fishes of Far Eastern seas (1930).
