The program grabbing headlines is the airborne laser, which in June completed a round of successful in-flight tests of the system using a surrogate solid-state laser to hit a missile in its boost phase.
Raytheon, a major American defense contractor and industrial corporation with core manufacturing concentrations in defense systems, recently tested a new version fitted with a solid-state Laser Area Defense System (LADS).
Unlike weapons such as Boeing's huge Airborne Laser, which burns chemical fuel, the solid-state laser consists of semiconductors that emit light when a voltage is applied.
