Solodovnikov, Vasilii Grigor’Evich 

Born Mar. 8, 1918. Soviet economist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

Solodovnikov graduated from the V. V. Kuibyshev Industrial Institute in Kuibyshev in 1942 and the All-Union Academy of Foreign Trade in 1946. In the period 1949-61 he engaged in scholarly research at various institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1961 to 1964 he served as a diplomat with the rank of envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the first class. In 1964 he became director of the Africa Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and from 1965 to 1973 he was vice-president of the International Congress of Africanists. His major publications are devoted to the socioeconomic and political problems of developing countries.

Solodovnikov has received honorary doctorates from the University of Lagos in Nigeria and Karl Marx University in Leipzig in the German Democratic Republic. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
