Solomon Dodashvili

Dodashvili, Solomon Ivanovich 

(known in Russia as S. I. Dodaev-Magarskii). Born May 17 (29), 1805, in the village of Magaro, in present-day Dusheti Raion; died Aug. 20 (Sept. 1), 1836, in Viatka. Georgian educator, writer, and public figure.

Dodashvili graduated from Petersburg University in 1827. He was close to the Decembrists. From 1828 to 1832 he edited the newspaper Tpilisis utskebani (Tiflis News) with its Literary Supplement. In December 1832 he was arrested and exiled to Viatka for participating in a conspiracy of the Georgian nobility against Russian autocracy. Dodashvili set forth his literary and aesthetic views in Rhetoric (1828; published, 1955). According to Dodashvili the principal aim of art is the truthful reproduction of life and the moral and aesthetic education of society. His work A Short Survey of Georgian Literature (1832) is also significant. Dodashvili was the teacher of N. Baratashvili and the friend and companion-in-arms of a galaxy of Georgian romantics.
