Solov’ev, Mikhail Dmitrievich 

Born Aug. 22 (Sept. 3), 1887, in Mologa, a former city in Yaroslavl Province; died Jan. 13, 1965, in Moscow. Soviet geodesist and cartographer. Member of the CPSU from 1944.

Solov’ev graduated from the Moscow Surveying Institute (now the Moscow Engineering Institute of Geodesy, Aerial Photographic Surveying, and Cartography) in 1911 and became a professor there in 1920. He developed the general theory for cylindrical projections and suggested specific variants of oblique perspective-cylindrical projections that were widely used in the preparation of instructional maps and geographical atlases. He also developed a theory for perspective projections with multiple representations.

Solov’ev was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and a number of medals.
