Solov’ev, Sergei Leonidovich 

Born Apr. 12, 1930, in Novgorod. Soviet geophysicist and seismologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1972).

After graduating from Leningrad State University in 1953, Solov’ev was a staff member of the Institute of Lithosphere Physics, the Council of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and the Sakhalin Integrated Scientific Research Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1961 he became head of a department at the Sakhalin Institute, and in 1971 he was made director of the institute.

Solov’ev’s most imporant works are on methods of classifying earthquakes with respect to energy, on seismicity, and on the division of the USSR and the Pacific Ocean into seismic regions. He has also studied the deep structure of the Kuril-Kamchatka arc and the surrounding ocean areas, hydroacoustic waves associated with seaquakes, and the problem of tsunamis. Solov’ev was the compiler of the Atlas of Earthquakes in the USSR (1962). Together with Chan Nam Go, he compiled the Catalog of Tsunamis on the Western Coast of the Pacific Ocean (1974).

Solov’ev became chairman of the commission on tsunamis of the Interdepartmental Council on Seismology and Earthquake-proof Construction of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1968. He was made chairman of the committee on tsunamis of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in 1971. Solov’ev has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
