a basin in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean, between the African coast and the Arabian-Indian and Mascarene underwater ridges. It stretches for about 2,800 km from northeast to southwest and about 1,800 km from northwest to southeast. The maximum depth is 5,824 m. The bottom is covered with ooze.
