Sombor
a city in Yugoslavia, in the Socialist Republic of Serbia. Located in the northwestern part of Vojvodina, a socialist autonomous region. Population, 45,000 (1974). Sombor is a transportation junction near the Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal and a trade center of the Backa agricultural region. Sombor has enterprises for the production of electrical-engineering equipment and agricultural machinery and enterprises of other branches of the metalworking industry. Enterprises of the chemical industry produce detergents, soaps, photographic materials, and pharmaceuticals. The city also has food-processing enterprises. While flour is the main product, beer, canned fruits and vegetables, and milk are also produced. Sombor also has enterprises for producing cotton textiles and processing hemp.
