According to the Bohr-Sommerfeld theory, the splitting in frequency of regular or relativistic doublets is α²R(Z- σ)⁴/n³(l+ 1), where α is the fine structure constant,Ris the Rydberg constant of the atom,Zis the atomic number, σ is a screening constant,nis the principal quantum number, andlis the orbital angular momentum quantum number.
