Songaila, Mykolas 

(also Mikhail Aleksandrovich San-gailo). Born Aug. 24 (Sept. 5), 1874, on the estate of Kuz’mino, Pskov Province; died Sept. 12, 1941, in Kaunas. Lithuanian architect.

Songaila studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1894 to 1903 and also in Italy. From 1908 to 1915 he taught at the Polytechnic Institute in St. Petersburg, and beginning in 1921 at the department of construction of the Lithuanian University in Kaunas. Songaila worked in the style of neoclassicism. He designed the building of the department of physics and chemistry of the Lithuanian University (1925; not preserved), a bank in Kaunas (1924–29), and banks in Utena (1932), Panevėžys (1932), Taurage (1935), and Mažeikiai (1937–38).
