On NW coast of CA, north of San Francisco; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the city, named for a Wintun Indian group that lived in the Sacramento Valley. The name means 'nose' but the reason in unknown; possibly referring to the shape of a peak. A fanciful interpretation is 'valley of the moon.'

Area (sq mi): 1768.23 (land 1575.88; water 192.35). Pop per sq mi: 296.00.
Pop 2005: 466,477. State rank: 17. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 18.10%. Pop 2000: 458,614 (White 74.50%; Black or African American 1.40%; Hispanic or Latino 17.30%; Asian 3.10%; Other 13.90%). Foreign born: 14.30%. Median age: 37.50.
Income 2000: per capita $25,724; median household $53,076; Pop below poverty level: 8.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $36,439-$36,466.
Unemployment 2004: 4.90%. Change from 2000: 2.00%. Median travel time to work: 26.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 18.00%.
