Name Origin: For the city, named for a Wintun Indian group that lived in the Sacramento Valley. The name means 'nose' but the reason in unknown; possibly referring to the shape of a peak. A fanciful interpretation is 'valley of the moon.' Area (sq mi): 1768.23 (land 1575.88; water 192.35). Pop per sq mi: 296.00. Pop 2005: 466,477. State rank: 17. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 18.10%. Pop 2000: 458,614 (White 74.50%; Black or African American 1.40%; Hispanic or Latino 17.30%; Asian 3.10%; Other 13.90%). Foreign born: 14.30%.
