Sonoran Desert

Arid region, western North America. Covering 120,000 sq mi (310,000 sq km), the Sonoran Desert is located in southwestern Arizona and southeastern California, U.S., and northern Baja California and western Sonora state, Mex. The desert's subdivisions include the Colorado and Yuma deserts. Irrigation has produced many fertile agricultural areas, notably the Coachella and Imperial valleys. Warm winters in the Sonoran Desert attract tourists to resorts such as Palm Springs, Tucson, and Phoenix. Indian reservations (see Papago; Pima) are located there.

The Storks of La Caridad" is Professor Emerita Florence Weinberg's third historical mystery featuring Father Ygnacio Pfefferkorn, a detective priest character based on an actual historical Jesuit missionary who was forcibly removed from his Sonora Desert mission around 1767 to be imprisoned for 6 years near Cadiz, Spain before being sent to La Caridad and the Norbertines for two years.
The centerpiece of the complex is the distinctive Winter Garden, known for its 16 majestic 12-meter palm trees from the Sonora desert, and the exquisite outdoor plaza, offering stunning views of the Hudson River and New York Harbor.
Historical photos of deserts and their inhabitants, taken by great nineteenth-century Orientalist travelers--Maxime du Camp, Francis Frith, and others--will be subject to critique via juxtaposition with contemporary works, including Lee Friedlander's commissioned study of the Sonora Desert, Lara Baladi's de-exoticizing views of an "everyday" desert used for strolling and relaxation, and pieces by Bill Viola and Balthasar Burckhardt.
