Sonsonate (sōnsōnä`tā), city (1993 pop. 46,101), capital of Sonsonate dept., SW El Salvador. It is the commercial center of a rich agricultural region, where cacao, coffee, sugar, tobacco, Peruvian balsam, and subsistence crops are produced.
