This issue was raised by many of the Asian scholars/teachers who participated in the Fulbright Conference on "Teaching American Literature and Culture in Asian Learning Context" at National Sun Yat-Sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, June 1-4, 2000, and at the "International Conference on Comparative Literature: Asian Initiatives," at Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan, March 24-26, 2001.
