Sorin, Edward (Frederick) (1814–93) religious leader; born in Ahuillé, France. Ordained in 1838, he emigrated to Indiana as a missionary (1841), founded Notre Dame University (1844), and was its president (1844–65). In 1868 he became superior general of his congregation, the Holy Cross Fathers.
