Sound Particle Velocity
(acoustic velocity), the velocity v with which particles (infinitely small parts of a medium) move with respect to the medium as a whole during oscillation around their equilibrium positions during the passage of a sound wave. Sound particle velocity must be distinguished both from the speed of motion of the medium itself and from the propagation velocity of the sound wave or the speed of sound c.
