sound transmission class, STC
A single-number rating of the sound insulation value of a partition, door, or window; it is derived from a curve of its insulation value as a function of frequency; the higher the number, the more effective the sound insulation.

Impact Sound The movement of non-impact or airborne sounds, such as speech, music and household noise, that travel through walls and ceilings is measured on a scale called the Sound Transmission Class (STC).
The sound transmission class was devised by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and STC rated doors are tested in compliance with the ASTM E90 Standard Method for Laboratory Measurement of Airborne Sound Transmission Loss of Building Partitions.
The Sound Trap system, configured with Firedoor's STC 51, 9' x 1-3/4" steel doors, achieved a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of 51, higher than the 50 rating specified for the project.
