They used gas clouds ejected from sounding rockets -- most often as a way to probe the structure of these fields.
Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center recently awarded the company a seven-year task order contract to provide target vehicles and related support for the Sounding Rockets Program-3 (SRP-3).
The first version of the manifest, which so far extends through May of 1992, represents 18 licenses for satellite launchings and two for sounding rockets.
