Andean Condor
(Vultur gryphus), a bird of the family Cathartidae of the order Falconiformes, the largest representative of the order. Its body measures more than 1 m long and its wingspread is greater than 2.8 m. The plumage is black with a slight gloss, and there are white bands on the wings. The head and neck are bald. The male has a wattle on his head. The talons are blunt, as they are in all vultures, and the bird cannot carry its prey in its claws. The Andean condor is distributed in the Andes, from Colombia to Tierra del Fuego. It nests in cliffs in the alpine belt in the north and at lower altitudes in the south. The clutch contains one or two white eggs. The bird feeds mostly on carrion.
