South Esther Island State Marine Park Location: On the southern end of Esther Island, 20 miles east of Whittier. Facilities: Undeveloped. Activities: Boating, fishing, hiking. Special Features: Park includes two bays, Lake and Quillian. Quillian Bay remains relatively undisturbed, while Lake Bay houses one of the world's largest fish hatcheries. The hatchery is owned and operated by a non-profit corporation, and tours of the facility are offered to visitors at no charge. Fishing here is good, but sport fishermen should avoid getting in the way of the daily operations of the hatchery. During commercial openings the fishing fleet crowds the area and visitors are advised to stay clear of the nets and boat traffic. During the height of the fish run, black bears can be seen near the hatchery.
