The group consists of eight mountainous islands and a large number of small islets and crags. There are some active volcanoes. The island group, which has an area of about 300 sq km, is composed primarily of young volcanic rocks (basalts, tuffs, and ash). The maximum elevation occurs at Mount Belinda (1,372 m) on Montagu Island. The South Sandwich Islands have a large bird population; they also serve as a breeding ground for seals. In 1775, a British expedition led by J. Cook mistakenly regarded the islands as part of a continental landmass and called them Sandwich Land in honor of the first lord of the Admiralty. F. F. Bellingshausen in 1820 was the first to establish that the islands are islands; he also provided the first descriptions of them and gave them their present name. How to thank TFD for its existence?
