Site of Nat Turner's (1800-31) Rebellion (1831). Part annexed to Franklin (independent) city effective December 31, 1995. Name Origin: For Henry Wriothesley (1573-1624), 3rd Earl of Southampton, English statesman and patron of William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Area (sq mi): 602.35 (land 599.56; water 2.80). Pop per sq mi: 29.30. Pop 2005: 17,585. State rank: 82. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.60%; 1990-2000 -0.40%. Pop 2000: 17,482 (White 55.80%; Black or African American 42.90%; Hispanic or Latino 0.70%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.00%). Foreign born: 0.30%. Median age: 38.60.
