In southeastern VA, west of Norfolk; organized Apr 30, 1749 from Isle of Wight and Nansemond counties. Site of Nat Turner's (1800-31) Rebellion (1831). Part annexed to Franklin (independent) city effective December 31, 1995. Name Origin: For Henry Wriothesley (1573-1624), 3rd Earl of Southampton, English statesman and patron of William Shakespeare (1564-1616).
