a counterrevolutionary organization that was formally created on Oct. 20, 1917, in Vladikavkaz at an assembly that was held for the purpose. On November 16 in Ekaterinodar, the Southeastern Union formed the United Government, which established relations with the bourgeois nationalist governments of Transcaucasia and the Crimea, the Central Rada of the Ukraine, and representatives of the English, French, and American imperialists.

The chairman of the Southeastern Union was General A. M. Kaledin. The members of the organization included large-scale landowners and capitalists of the Northern Caucasus and Kalmykia, atamans of the cossack hosts, and persons who belonged to the bourgeois, pomeshchich’i (owning large amounts of land) upper strata of the Don, Kuban’, and Terek cossack hosts.
