Southern blotting [′sə·th·ərn ‚bläd·iŋ]
(cell and molecular biology) A technique for the detection of specific sequences among deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragments whereby the fragments are separated by gel electrophoresis and then blotted onto a sheet of nitrocellulose for detection with radioactively labeled nucleic acid probes.
