Southern Uplands
a region in Scotland, between the Central Lowlands (Scotland) on the north and the Pennine Mountains (England) on the south. The Southern Uplands are about 180 km long from southwest to northeast. They form distinct mountain masses with elevations of 300–600 m; the highest peak, Mount Merrick, has an elevation of 842 m. The uplands are composed primarily of granites and schists. Vestiges of ancient glaciation include cirques, moraines, and boulder belts. Peat bogs, heaths, and meadows are encountered. The economy of the region includes sheep raising and dairy farming.
