Spiegel, Der


(German; “The Mirror”)

Weekly newsmagazine, preeminent in Germany and one of the best and most widely circulated in Europe. Founded in 1946 as Diese Woche (“This Week”) and published in Hamburg since 1947, it is respected both for its news coverage and analysis and for its concise writing. It is especially renowned for its aggressive exposés of government malpractice and scandals and for its photography. It resembles Time and Newsweek in format but is usually much thicker.


Spiegel, Der 

an illustrated weekly magazine published in the Federal Republic of Germany. It was founded in 1947 in Hanover and has been published in Hamburg since 1952. One of the most influential weeklies in the Federal Republic of Germany, the magazine is oriented toward the liberal circles of the bourgeoisie and the intelligentsia. Circulation, 1.1 million (1977).
