Spielhagen, Friedrich (frē`drĭkh shpēl`hägən), 1829–1911, German novelist. His works, chiefly on social and political themes, include Problematische Naturen (1861, tr. Problematic Characters, 1869) and Sturmflut (1876, tr. The Breaking of the Storm, 1877). Also important are his theoretical works on the techniques of drama, the novel, and the epic.
