Spier, Leslie Ephraim (1893–1961) anthropologist; born in New York City. He was a specialist in American Indian culture, particularly known for his work on the Ghost Dance religion. During a long teaching career ending at the University of New Mexico (1939–55), he helped develop anthropology as an academic discipline and led the application of ethnographical techniques to historical research.
