[FIGURE 1 OMITTED] Due to the contour of the thoracic laminae and general orientation of the articular processes the zygapophysial joints appear to lie flat, close to the spinous processes with the prominent costotransverse joints lying more laterally (Figure 1).
Bae performed a minimally disruptive procedure called ILIF[TM] (Interlaminar Lumbar Instrumented Fusion), which involves temporarily opening up the space between the spinous processes and careful removal of small sections of bone to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
This may make it confusing for the novice to determine in these cases where the sides of the cervical spinous processes and laminae referred to are, as the demonstrators push on the upper trapezius muscle belly.
