spintronics |
Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.10 sec. |
spintronics(SPIN elecTRONICS) Using the spin of an electron to represent binary data (0 or 1). Spintronics techniques are capable of much higher speed while requiring less power than the conventional method of using electron charges to represent data. Expected to become widely used in sensors and non-volatile memories, the first use of spintronics was in the late 1980s with the development of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) read heads for disk drives. Such a "spin battery" could prove very important, Mohanty claims, because a new, electron spin-based approach to information processing, called spintronics, lacks reliable ways to generate spin-polarized currents on demand. Two research programs IBM sponsors are CITRIS with Berkeley (see sidebar, page 43) and a nanotechnology project with Stanford University, called Spintronics, where about 30 professors, graduate students and IBM scientists are working on ways to magnetize electrons to improve the performance of computers. In particular, it is anticipated that the half-metallic behavior these materials exhibit will provide fully spin-polarized electrons for use in spintronics applications, for sensors in a variety of applications such as in the automotive industry, and may also provide the next generation of read/write heads for the magnetic data storage industry. |
