A complex of related antibiotics, which resemble erythromycin structurally and in antibacterial spectrum, produced byStreptomyces ambofaciens.

In July 1999, virginiamycin, together with 3 other growth promoters--tylosin, spiramycin, and bacitracin-was banned in the entire EU.
The WHO provided chemoprophylactic guidelines similar to those reflected in Table 1, but also included spiramycin or minocycline for five days as alternatives (WHO, 1998:28).
In Britain's case, the four antibiotics - Tysolin Phosphate, Bacitracin Zinc, Spiramycin and Virginiamycin - will be outlawed from July 1 1999.
